Capsulab is Coboi lab’s monthly knowledge capsule. We want to share our internal research on topics such as innovation, labs and multi-actor projects, among others. And, from there, generate concise and practical content and materials with the aim of sharing the key learnings.

In this capsule we talk about:

Strategic planning represented a significant advancement in management culture, based on a long-term vision of objectives, priorities and resources. However, this approach presents a problem: while an organization plans, the world does not wait for it. The context changes at a faster pace than our ability to plan. That is why strategic planning is now considered a limited tool. Innovation does not emerge as an alternative to strategic planning, but rather as a complement to be able to link the organization’s objectives with changing contexts. Strategic planning is insufficient, but so is innovation without strategic planning .

In this sense, the authors propose the following innovation model: a model where the organization’s vision is defined through a strategy and is implemented through updated instruments. The aim is to move away from a rigid strategic planning model in favor of flexibility. At the same time, strategy plays a key role because, without it, innovation would lack focus and direction. With strategy, innovation grows, becomes more creative and delivers better results.

The authors’ goeal is to strengthen the organitzation’s ability to better manage changes in the environment in order to reverse outdated or obsolete policies. Innovation continuously explores and interacts with the external contexts of the organization, helping to refine and update the strategy. In summary, innovation works from the outside in – starting from problems and perspectives to create new forms of public value – while planning works from the inside out – based on established structures and traditional bureaucratic cultures.
