InnoDelta Hack: Challenge Identification Session

A collaborative day to detect strategic challenges in the region

On March 7, 2023, Coboi Lab hosted the session “Innodelta Hack: Challenge Identification,” a meeting with logistics companies from the region, held within the framework of the PECT Innodelta project. This session was designed to share concerns, opportunities and key challenges in the territory with the participation of various actors. The InnoDelta Hack project is an open innovation process in a hackathon format focused on sustainable logistics and mobility associated with logistics, to be developed throughout 2023 with local companies.

The session marked the starting point with the aim of defining common challenges related to logistics. The working session consisted of an individual brainstorming exercise, followed by a group discussion and a subsequent prioritization of a maximum of three issues. Together with the twelve participating companies, a vote was held to decide which issues would be addressed and defined as challenges. There was also the possibility of individually committing to a particular issue or group of issues, which entailed an additional level of commitment. This session is part of the rollout of the Delta Labs Network and represents an initial phase of collaborative work toward cocreating solutions.

The most widely voted issues were addressed in groups using the 4>17 Method, the methodology developed by Coboi Lab. The following three common challenges were defined:

• Challenge 1: How could we optimize inventory management to improve control and productivity?

The participating companies were Tecnisample-Friobox, Seutrans, Mesoestètic, IMES3D and AAM. The issue at hand was stock optimization (reliability of SGA systems, dimensionality, expiration/obsolescence, non-automated cyclical inventories, etc.). The companies identified barriers such as a lack of necessary investment, insufficient technical knowledge and appropriate solutions, lack of trust in external proposals, and technological volatility. The desired change is to improve stock control, better adjust demand, and increase efficiency.

• Challenge 2: How could we improve processes to reduce operation time?

The participating companies were MBE Airport, Lluch Essence and Multitrade Spain. The issue at hand was traceability, reliable and digitalized documentation. This had not yet been tackled due to a lack of standardization and digital tools. The desired change is to improve capacity and speed, while minimizing human error.

• Challenge 3: How could we optimize routes to gain productivity and sustainability?

The participating companies were TXT and Mercadona. The issue at hand was the optimization of delivery routes in accordance with regulations and available technological tools. The companies noted that this problem had not been addressed previously due to a lack of institutional support and the absence of suitable partners to develop a solution. The desired change is to increase productivity and improve sustainability.

We positively value the companies’ willingness to collaborate and identify common challenges. The clear identification of issues reflects a strong internal analysis within the companies and facilitated the group discussion. Beyond the definition of common challenges, a strong interest and clear commitment to solving these issues became evident.

Finally, the companies reported a high level of identification with the shared challenges (with an average score of 8.81 out of 10, where 1 meant low identification and 10 meant very high).
