Young people from Sant Boi co-design the Espai BETA Residences

On May 8, 2024 , the Espai BETA hosted a co-ideation day with a very specific objective: for the youth of Sant Boi de Llobregat to participate in the design of the Residencies before they became a public call. The initial proposal for the program was put on the table so that it would be the young people themselves who would review, question and improve it.

The session started from a challenge : to find out what value proposition young people really need to commit to a public residence, overcoming the classic vision of mandatory hourly attendance and avoiding administrative barriers to entry. The project was nourished by the learnings of the first edition of Residencies (2019-2020) and the City Council’s commitment to retaining young local talent.

Coboi lab led the day: it designed the methodological script, facilitated the participatory dynamics and acted as a mediator between the youth and the Administration , ensuring that their contributions reached the definitive regulatory bases. The following participated:

  • 19 young people from Sant Boi as active participants.
  • Representatives of local entities and knowledge centers .
  • Technical and political leaders of the Youth, Business and Digital Transformation departments of the City Council.

Method 4 was applied. >17 of Coboi lab , which combines guided brainstorming, small group discussions with representation of the Quadruple Helix and visual facilitation on a large whiteboard to classify and prioritize consensus in real time.

The consensus that emerged was clear:

  1. Profiles and teams : open participation also to collective and multidisciplinary projects.
  2. Flexibility, not control : a rigid control of in-person attendance “scares”. A hybrid residence with morning and afternoon shifts is proposed.
  3. Duration : shorter and more flexible stays than the traditional 10 months.
  4. Dissemination : local networks, Instagram with a young and informal tone, WhatsApp and physical points such as youth centers, libraries, high schools and buses.
  5. Considerations : that the program be a speaker for the projects and that social return is made by sharing knowledge within the space.

The great learning of the day is that involving young people from the start is essential to generate a sense of belonging . Listening to their reluctance allowed the service to be reoriented in time: from a coworking space to a hosting and community care model . The next step was to draft the final version of the rules and open the official call.
