In 2024, Aalto University has started a collaboration with Coboi Lab to apply Method 4> 17 in two projects on digital public services in Finland. This alliance has allowed exploring how to structure co-creation processes with diverse groups and give legitimacy to innovative methodologies within the public sector.
The common goal of the two Finnish projects was to improve digital public services through co-creation processes with citizens through two projects:
This project seeks to develop trusted digital public services for the migrant population in Espoo (Finland), a city where 20% of the population has a mother tongue other than Finnish or Swedish. The aim is to work with migrant mothers from disadvantaged communities and improve co-creation with residents to build more accessible and effective services.
Project where the challenge was to understand and promote citizen agency in the creation of artificial intelligence services in Helsinki, focusing on digital democratization and algorithmic justice .
Method 4> 17 has served as a structural framework to guide these processes, adapting to the particularities of each context and encouraging the real participation of the communities involved.
The link with Coboi Lab was established after researchers Uttishta Varanasi and Karolina Drobotowicz , from Aalto University, discovered Method 4.> 17.
Thanks to the connection facilitated by professor Johanna Ylipullii , a direct collaboration was established with Sergi Frías , head of Coboi Lab and founder of Method 4.> 17.
The application of Method 4> 17 has provided several key lessons:
Methodological legitimation : Having a structured methodology provides support and credibility with institutions.
Contextual adaptation : The methodology must be adjusted according to the needs of the project; it is not necessary to apply all the phases literally.
Prior preparation and clear leadership : It is essential to structure the schedule well and involve key stakeholders from the beginning.
Building a shared language : It promotes co-creation when terminology and vision are shared.
Working with vulnerable communities : Continuity and trust are key to achieving real impacts.
In practice, Method 4> 17 has served to provide coherence and methodological support to collaborative dynamics with migrant mothers and citizens involved in the development of AI services, reinforcing citizen participation and inclusive design.
